This bar top is American Black Walnut, (Juglans nigra). It may look different from walnut you normally see, in that it has more sap wood than most commercially available lumber. Walnut trees are common throughout the east and Midwest.
The bar top is made of 3 sequential boards cut from the same 24” diameter walnut tree, and you can see the “live edge” on the customer side of the bar. The tree that these boards came from probably grew within 30 miles of their now home, and was sawn about 5 years ago at TC Woods, a local “urban sawmill”, located in Fort Lupton. All of the trees he cuts are from homes or commercial properties on the Front Range.
A great set of reclaimed maple/birch truck decking counters, with their distressed, well-used character front-and-center. These counters matched with a dynamic facade of reclaimed barnwood for the front skirting. A great complement to the 1890's-era building and interior details which were lovingly restored by our good friends and owners of Crystal Springs Brewing Company, Tom and Kristy Horst.
The main bar top, pass-through counter, and the stand-up counter are made from 6 sequential slabs cut from the same 30” diameter elm tree, and you can see the “live edge” on the edges of the tops.
The bar tops are American Elm (Ulmus americana), and show a bit of bird’s-eye figure. American elm is the tree which was nearly completely wiped out in the in the United States by Dutch Elm Disease in the 1900’s, but this tree lived through that blight.
The tree that these boards came from was 100 years old when cut in 2011 by the Longmont forestry department, as a street tree that was damaged in the October storm. The log was then sawn in 2012 at TC Woods, a local “urban sawmill”, located in Fort Lupton, CO.
This Elm is enjoying a second life as these counters, less than 15 miles from where it grew originally; not a bad legacy!

This counter is built from reclaimed truck decking, a very durable material made of solid White oak (Quercus alba) in a butcher-block orientation. It measures 6 feet wide at the far end and 12 feet long. It serves as Pedal Pushers Bike Shop's new Bikes and Brews bar top, and features the distressed surface and torx bolts from when it lived in the truck.
This massive walnut bar top (Juglans nigra) is made from a 2" thick, 4 foot by 11 foot slab for a private residence. The walnut slab came from a golf course in Indiana, and shows gorgeous figure.
A Black walnut (Juglans nigra) fireplace mantel for a home, with a nice live edge, and hidden brackets within the corbels below, made from part of the same original slab.
A lovely mantel for a local friend. Hand-picked local Silver maple slab, fit into a custom niche, with the trimmed piece re-imagined as a backsplash to reflect the Continental Divide mountain range visible out the adjacent window. Gorgeous quilted maple grain surrounding the prominent branch knot. Excellent natural bark live-edge, which is sometimes hard to preserve. Very nice.
Lovingly hand-made inspirational plaques, each one custom-engraved by laser. Bird's-eye elm, honeylocust, walnut, and Russian olive, also available in pine, spruce, sycamore, you name it. Each one hand-crafted for the intended recipient. Great gifts for housewarmings, weddings, birth announcements, and any life events. If you can imagine it, we can fulfill it.
